PROJECT OCEAN
Giant whales offer a bucking rodeo ride, while sea creature-shaped balloons (biodegradable, of course) fill the atrium. The lobster hat that Philip Treacy made for Lady Gaga is displayed in the Wonder Room.
Outside, the store is lighted ocean blue and has a digital, interactive window that is pulling the crowds: virtual fish “swim” across the glass while a donation of £3, or $4.80, gives a chance to give a fish a name.
The soul of the project is at the seafood counters in the Selfridges food hall, where the store, in collaboration with its restaurants and other celebrity chefs, is following international guidelines for preserving the overfished oceans.
“It’s about making a big noise about a good issue — as a retailer, we are good at selling things — and good at communicating,” said Alannah Weston, the store’s creative director and scion of the family company. “Amaze, inspire, engage” is her mantra for Project Ocean, which will run until June 12.

Levis Denim Art, Regent Street

Coinciding with the launch of the Levi's® Water<Less jeans - made using significantly less water, this sculpture is based on water and fluidity - over 100 pairs of jeans are fixed together in the form of a giant whirlpool.

The process involved first constructing a cone structure from the ground upwards and inverting this to hang from the ceiling. Its openings allow light to travel through and cast shadows and shapes, further enhancing the sense of movement and dynamism in this landmark space.

Using jeans as a building material presented some technical challenges, but we had a lot of fun with it. Levis have been incredibly supportive and the installation reflects their enthusiasm for taking risks and embracing new ideas.’ Ian McChesney.

Aesop Window Scheme

Selfridges, London

Selfridges’ second window scheme of 2011, Wild Wood

The interpretation of Spring’s Supernature was inspired by the natural references in the spring/summer 2011 collections, from butterfly embellishment at Alexander McQueen to mismatched floral prints at Etro. Every piece showcased in the Oxford Street windows has been hand picked to complement the dark, mysterious setting of our woodland theme.

Gloriously enlarged images of plants and flowers, as well 3D props like oversized mushrooms and tree stumps, form the backdrop of the forest, inhabited by woodland nymphs with berry-stained lips who can be found rambling in the undergrowth of the wild, wild wood.
